Emergency transfusion refers to urgent transfusion in patients who experience serious consequences in case of any delay. Massive transfusion is designed to provide large quantities of blood components rapidly to exsanguinating patients. Domestic consensus regarding emergency and massive transfusion protocol is required for optimal management. Our objective is to introduce a standard operation manual for emergency and massive transfusion. The following research has been conducted: first, a review of domestic and foreign literature; second, a survey of medical staff in institutions with substantial records of blood transfusion; third, a seminar on emergency and massive transfusion; finally, the development of a standardized manual of procedures for emergency and massive transfusion. This standard operation manual provides guidance for the treatment of patients who need emergency or massive transfusion, adapted to application in the Korean medical environment.
